Ear Wax Extraction at The Hearing Haven in Amarillo, Texas

Ear wax is something we all have, but sometimes, it can cause problems. When ear wax builds up, it can affect your hearing and even lead to discomfort. Luckily, ear wax extraction is a simple and safe process that can make a big difference. At The Hearing Haven in Amarillo, Texas, expert professionals are ready to help with gentle and effective ear wax removal.

What Is Ear Wax and Why Do We Have It?

Ear wax, also called cerumen, is a natural substance that our bodies produce. It might seem unnecessary, but ear wax actually plays an important role in keeping your ears healthy.

The Benefits of Ear Wax

  1. Protects Your Ears: Ear wax helps trap dust, dirt, and other small particles, preventing them from reaching deeper parts of your ear, where they could cause infections or damage.
  2. Keeps Your Ears Clean: Ear wax is part of your body’s natural cleaning process. As it moves out of the ear canal, it carries away debris and dead skin cells.
  3. Prevents Dryness: Ear wax helps keep the skin in your ear canals from becoming too dry and irritated.

How Does Ear  Wax Move?

Normally, ear wax works its way out of the ear naturally. As you move your jaw (for example, when chewing or talking), ear wax slowly moves toward the opening of the ear, where it dries up and flakes away.

What Causes Ear Wax Buildup?

While ear wax is helpful, too much of it can cause problems. For some people, ear wax doesn’t move out of the ear as easily as it should. When this happens, it can lead to a buildup that may need professional removal.

Common Causes of Ear Wax Buildup

  1. Using Cotton Swabs: Many people use cotton swabs to clean their ears, but this often pushes the ear wax further into the ear canal, making it harder for the wax to come out on its own.
  2. Narrow Ear Canals: Some people have naturally narrow ear canals, which makes it harder for ear wax to move out.
  3. Earbuds or Hearing Aids: Regular use of earbuds or hearing aids can block the ear canal, trapping ear wax inside.
  4. Increased Ear wax Production: For some people, the body simply produces more ear wax than necessary, leading to build up over time.

Signs of Ear Wax Buildup

How can you tell if earwax is building up in your ears? Here are some common signs that it might be time for ear wax removal:

Muffled Hearing

One of the most noticeable signs of earwax buildup is muffled or reduced hearing. When ear wax blocks the ear canal, sound has a harder time traveling through, making everything sound quieter.

Earache or Fullness

Ear wax buildup can cause discomfort, including feelings of fullness or pressure in the ear. In some cases, it can even lead to ear pain.

Ringing in the Ears

A condition called tinnitus—a ringing or buzzing sound in the ears—can sometimes be caused by earwax buildup. Once the wax is removed, the ringing often goes away.

Dizziness

If ear wax buildup is pressing against your eardrum, it can sometimes cause balance issues or dizziness.

Why Should You Avoid DIY Ear Wax Removal?

It might be tempting to remove ear wax yourself, but doing so can cause more harm than good. The ear canal is sensitive, and using tools like cotton swabs, bobby pins, or ear candles can push the wax deeper into your ear or even damage your eardrum.

Here are some reasons why DIY ear wax removal is not recommended:

Risk of Injury

Using sharp or pointed objects in your ear can easily lead to injury. The ear canal is delicate, and it’s easy to accidentally scratch the skin or poke the eardrum, causing pain and potential damage.

Worsening the Problem

Instead of helping, cotton swabs and other tools often make the situation worse by pushing the wax further into the ear canal, making it harder to remove.

Infections

Improper ear wax removal can lead to ear infections. When the skin inside the ear canal is damaged, bacteria can get in and cause an infection, leading to pain, swelling, and drainage.

How Is Ear Wax Removed?

There are several methods professionals use to safely remove ear wax, depending on the situation. At The Hearing Haven, they may use one of the following techniques:

1. Ear Irrigation

One of the most common methods is ear irrigation, where warm water is gently flushed into the ear canal to soften and remove the ear wax. The process is quick, painless, and effective for most people.

2. Manual Removal

In some cases, a professional may use special tools like a small curette (a loop-shaped instrument) to gently scoop out the ear wax. This is done carefully under proper lighting to avoid any damage to the ear.

3. Suction

For more delicate or difficult cases, a gentle suction device may be used to remove the ear wax. This method is especially useful if the wax is very hard or impacted.

What to Expect During Your Appointment

When you visit The Hearing Haven for ear wax removal, you can expect a comfortable and straightforward process. Here’s what typically happens during an ear wax extraction appointment:

1. Initial Examination

First, the hearing specialist will take a look inside your ear with an otoscope to assess the amount of ear wax and determine the best removal method.

2. Ear Wax Removal

Once the specialist has examined your ear, they’ll use the appropriate method (irrigation, manual removal, or suction) to remove the ear wax. The process is usually quick and painless, and many people experience immediate relief from symptoms like muffled hearing or pressure.

3. Post-Procedure Care

After the ear wax is removed, the specialist may offer advice on how to keep your ears clean and avoid future buildup. If you experience frequent ear wax buildup, they may recommend regular cleanings.

Hearing loss is a daily journey. Many people want to  know why OTC (over the counter) hearing aid solutions are not as easy as they seem. It’s not as simple as putting a device in your ear and hearing like you remember. Hearing and auditory understanding are two completely different beasts. Majority of individuals say I can't hear. What they mean is I am not understanding words clearly. This has to do with your brain and how it is processing sound. There are many factors to consider when purchasing a hearing aid and what your provider is going to do for you to ensure success over years, not just a few months. Truly, your hearing aids are worthless without an experienced professional to submit a prescription and follow up treatment plan. At the hearing haven we are not saying you won’t have problems. In fact we are stating the opposite. We specialize in customized hearing solutions for everyone. We are committed to recommending and providing proper hearing protection for recreational and industrial adventures. We strive for an earlier adoption rate. Most people wait until it is too late. Majority insurances can offer coverage for their members before claiming medicare. Sadly, people wait till they are on medicare, expecting payment. That simply isn’t true. Medicare does not offer the proper payment for these circumstances. We are committed to educating and advocating on the patient's behalf and to offer affordable options.
