Hearing Aid Cleaning at The Hearing Haven in Amarillo, Texas

Hearing aids are an important part of daily life for those who rely on them, but they also need regular care to keep them working at their best. One essential part of this care is keeping them clean. At The Hearing Haven in Amarillo, Texas, professional hearing aid cleaning services can help ensure your hearing aids stay in top condition.

Why Hearing Aid Cleaning is Important

Hearing aids are tiny devices that sit inside or behind your ears, so it’s no surprise that they can get dirty over time. Dust, sweat, earwax, and moisture can all build up on your hearing aids, causing them to work less effectively or even break down.

Maintains Sound Quality

When hearing aids get dirty, the sound they produce can become muffled or distorted. This can make it harder to hear clearly, especially in noisy environments. Regular cleaning ensures that your hearing aids deliver the best possible sound quality.

Extends the Life of Your Hearing Aids

Hearing aids are an investment, and like anything else, they need care to last. Dirt and debris can cause parts of the hearing aid to wear out or malfunction over time. By keeping them clean, you can help extend their lifespan and avoid costly repairs or replacements.

Prevents Infections

Dirty hearing aids can trap bacteria, which can lead to ear infections. Regular cleaning helps keep your hearing aids and your ears clean and healthy, reducing the risk of infection.

Signs Your Hearing Aids Need Cleaning

Not sure if your hearing aids need a good cleaning? Here are some signs to watch for:

Sound is Muffled

If your hearing aids suddenly sound quieter or less clear than usual, dirt or earwax might be blocking the microphones or speakers.

Whistling or Feedback

Hearing a high-pitched whistling sound, also known as feedback, can be a sign that something is blocking the sound from coming through your hearing aids properly. This is often due to a buildup of earwax or other debris.

They Look Dirty

If you can see earwax or dirt on your hearing aids, it’s time for a cleaning. Even a small amount of buildup can impact how well your hearing aids work.

How The Hearing Haven Cleans Hearing Aids

At The Hearing Haven in Amarillo, Texas, we understand how important it is to keep your hearing aids working their best. That’s why we offer professional cleaning services to help maintain their performance.

Visual Inspection

Your appointment begins with a visual inspection of your hearing aids. The specialists will look for visible dirt, debris, or earwax on the devices, as well as any signs of damage that might need repair.

Gentle Cleaning Techniques

Once the inspection is done, the cleaning process begins. At The Hearing Haven, we use safe, gentle techniques to carefully clean your hearing aids without damaging them. Here’s how we do it:

  • Brushing and Wiping: A small brush is used to remove any dirt, dust, or earwax that has collected on the outside of your hearing aids. We also use a soft cloth to wipe them clean.
  • Wax Guards and Filters: Many hearing aids have tiny wax guards or filters that help prevent earwax from getting into the delicate parts of the device. These guards may need to be replaced during cleaning if they’re clogged with wax.
  • Tube and Vent Cleaning: If your hearing aids have tubes or vents, we’ll carefully clean these areas using specialized tools. This helps ensure that air and sound can pass through the hearing aid as they should.

Moisture Removal

Moisture is a common enemy of hearing aids, especially in hot or humid environments. At The Hearing Haven in Amarillo, Texas, we use drying tools or devices to remove any moisture that might have built up inside the hearing aids. This step helps protect the electronics inside from damage.

Battery Check

Finally, we’ll check your hearing aid batteries to make sure they’re still in good working order. If the batteries are low or need replacing, we’ll take care of that for you too.

How Often Should You Clean Your Hearing Aids?

While professional cleaning at The Hearing Haven is important, it’s also a good idea to clean your hearing aids at home between visits. Here’s a simple guide on how often you should clean them:

Daily Cleaning

It’s a good habit to wipe down your hearing aids with a clean, dry cloth every night before bed. This removes any moisture or dirt that has collected during the day.

Weekly Cleaning

Once a week, use a small brush or a cleaning tool to carefully clean around the microphones and any vents on your hearing aids. Be gentle to avoid damaging the delicate parts.

Professional Cleaning

Even with regular at-home cleaning, it’s still important to have your hearing aids professionally cleaned every 3-6 months. This ensures that any dirt or wax buildup that you can’t reach at home is properly removed.

Tips for Keeping Your Hearing Aids Clean

In addition to regular cleaning, there are some simple steps you can take to keep your hearing aids clean and working well.

Wash Your Hands

Always make sure your hands are clean before handling your hearing aids. This helps prevent dirt and oils from getting onto the devices.

Keep Them Dry

Moisture can damage hearing aids, so try to avoid wearing them in the rain or while swimming. If your hearing aids get wet, dry them off as soon as possible and use a hearing aid dehumidifier if needed.

Store Them Properly

When you’re not wearing your hearing aids, store them in a dry, cool place. Many people use a special hearing aid storage case or drying box to protect their devices when they’re not in use.

Avoid Hair Products

Hairspray, gels, and other hair products can clog your hearing aids and cause them to stop working properly. Try to apply these products before putting in your hearing aids, and avoid spraying them directly onto the devices.

Hearing loss is a daily journey. Many people want to  know why OTC (over the counter) hearing aid solutions are not as easy as they seem. It’s not as simple as putting a device in your ear and hearing like you remember. Hearing and auditory understanding are two completely different beasts. Majority of individuals say I can't hear. What they mean is I am not understanding words clearly. This has to do with your brain and how it is processing sound. There are many factors to consider when purchasing a hearing aid and what your provider is going to do for you to ensure success over years, not just a few months. Truly, your hearing aids are worthless without an experienced professional to submit a prescription and follow up treatment plan. At the hearing haven we are not saying you won’t have problems. In fact we are stating the opposite. You will encounter many problems during your better hearing journey and we ensure when you are experiencing that problem we will be there to resolve it quickly and with integrity.

We specialize in customized hearing solutions for everyone. We are committed to recommending and providing proper hearing protection for recreational and industrial adventures. We strive for an earlier adoption rate. Most people wait until it is too late. Majority insurances can offer coverage for their members before claiming medicare. Sadly, people wait till they are on medicare, expecting payment. That simply isn’t true. Medicare does not offer the proper payment for these circumstances. We are committed to educating and advocating on the patient's behalf and to offer affordable options.
