Do you hear a constant ringing, buzzing, or hissing in your ears? You’re not alone. This condition, called tinnitus, affects millions of people worldwide. While it can be frustrating and uncomfortable, there’s hope. At The Hearing Haven in Amarillo, Texas, you can get a ringing in ears assessment to figure out what’s causing the noise and how to manage it.
Tinnitus is the perception of sound in the ears or head when there’s no external source. This sound can vary in volume and type—it might sound like ringing, buzzing, hissing, or even clicking. For some people, tinnitus is mild, while for others, it can be loud enough to interfere with daily life.
Tinnitus can have several causes, and it’s important to get a professional assessment to determine the exact reason behind it. Here are some of the most common causes:
Getting a proper assessment can help pinpoint the exact cause of your tinnitus, so you can take steps to manage it.
If you’ve been dealing with tinnitus, you might be wondering whether it’s worth getting it checked out. The answer is yes. A ringing in ears assessment can help determine what’s causing the noise and what can be done about it.
The most important part of a tinnitus assessment is figuring out the root cause. Whether it’s related to hearing loss, a medical condition, or something else, identifying the cause can help guide treatment.
In some cases, tinnitus can be a symptom of a more serious health problem, such as a circulatory issue or even a tumor. While these cases are rare, it’s essential to rule out any serious underlying conditions.
Once the cause of your tinnitus is determined, your specialist can work with you to create a customized treatment plan. This could involve managing hearing loss, addressing medical conditions, or exploring options like sound therapy.
At The Hearing Haven in Amarillo, the team takes a comprehensive approach to tinnitus assessments. Here’s a step-by-step look at what you can expect during your visit.
The first step of your assessment will involve going over your medical and hearing history. Your specialist will ask questions about when the tinnitus started, how often you experience it, and whether there are certain times or places where it’s worse. They may also ask about your exposure to loud noises, any recent infections, or medications you’re taking.
Next, you’ll likely undergo a hearing test. Since tinnitus is often linked to hearing loss, this is an important part of the assessment. You’ll wear headphones and listen to a series of sounds and tones, pressing a button when you hear them. This will help your specialist determine whether hearing loss is a factor in your tinnitus.
In some cases, your specialist may also perform tympanometry, which tests how well your middle ear is functioning. This test can help detect issues like fluid behind the eardrum or other middle ear problems that might be causing the tinnitus.
One of the more specific tests for tinnitus is tinnitus pitch matching. During this test, your specialist will play a variety of sounds at different pitches and ask you to identify which one is closest to the sound you’re hearing in your ears. This helps create a clearer picture of your tinnitus.
Another test that might be done is loudness matching. This involves playing sounds at different volume levels to find out how loud your tinnitus is compared to other sounds. Understanding the loudness of your tinnitus can help in designing a treatment plan.
There’s no one-size-fits-all solution for tinnitus, but there are several effective ways to manage it. After your assessment at The Hearing Haven, your specialist will go over the treatment options that might work best for you.
If your tinnitus is linked to hearing loss, hearing aids can make a big difference. Hearing aids can not only improve your ability to hear but also help mask the ringing or buzzing sounds by amplifying external noises.
Sound therapy is a popular treatment for tinnitus. It involves using background sounds, such as white noise, nature sounds, or soft music, to help mask the ringing in your ears. Sound therapy can be done through special devices, apps, or even hearing aids with built-in sound therapy features.
TRT combines sound therapy with counseling to help your brain learn to tune out the tinnitus sounds. Over time, this can make the ringing or buzzing less noticeable and less bothersome.
For people whose tinnitus is causing stress, anxiety, or sleep problems, CBT can be a helpful tool. This type of therapy focuses on changing how you think about your tinnitus, helping you cope with it more effectively.
In some cases, simple lifestyle changes can make a big difference in managing tinnitus. Reducing your intake of caffeine, alcohol, and salt can help reduce the severity of tinnitus symptoms. Managing stress and getting enough rest can also make tinnitus more manageable.

Hearing loss is a daily journey. Many people want to know why OTC (over the counter) hearing aid solutions are not as easy as they seem. It’s not as simple as putting a device in your ear and hearing like you remember. Hearing and auditory understanding are two completely different beasts. Majority of individuals say I can't hear. What they mean is I am not understanding words clearly. This has to do with your brain and how it is processing sound. There are many factors to consider when purchasing a hearing aid and what your provider is going to do for you to ensure success over years, not just a few months. Truly, your hearing aids are worthless without an experienced professional to submit a prescription and follow up treatment plan. At the hearing haven we are not saying you won’t have problems. In fact we are stating the opposite. You will encounter many problems during your better hearing journey and we ensure when you are experiencing that problem we will be there to resolve it quickly and with integrity.
We specialize in customized hearing solutions for everyone. We are committed to recommending and providing proper hearing protection for recreational and industrial adventures. We strive for an earlier adoption rate. Most people wait until it is too late. Majority insurances can offer coverage for their members before claiming medicare. Sadly, people wait till they are on medicare, expecting payment. That simply isn’t true. Medicare does not offer the proper payment for these circumstances. We are committed to educating and advocating on the patient's behalf and to offer affordable options.
