Tinnitus is more common than you might think. Many people experience a ringing, buzzing, or even roaring sound in their ears that isn’t coming from the environment around them. This condition can range from a mild annoyance to a serious distraction that affects your daily life. Thankfully, at The Hearing Haven in Amarillo, Texas, you can get a thorough tinnitus evaluation to help understand and manage this condition.
Tinnitus is the perception of sound when no external noise is present. While it’s often described as a ringing in the ears, tinnitus can manifest in other ways. Some people hear a buzzing, hissing, clicking, or whistling sound. The noise can vary in pitch, volume, and frequency, and it might be in one ear or both. For some, it’s intermittent, while for others, it’s constant. The experts at The Hearing Haven in Amarillo, Texas can help determine what the noise is and how to cure it.
Tinnitus isn’t a disease itself but a symptom of an underlying condition. There are several potential causes, including:
Understanding the cause of your tinnitus is the first step in finding a solution, which is why a tinnitus evaluation at The Hearing Haven is so important.
If you have been living with tinnitus, you know how frustrating it can be. It’s not just the constant noise in your ears; it’s how it affects your ability to concentrate, sleep, and enjoy life. Some people find that tinnitus makes it difficult to hear conversations or focus on tasks.
A tinnitus evaluation is essential because it helps to:
At The Hearing Haven in Amarillo, Texas, the tinnitus evaluation process is designed to pinpoint the cause of your symptoms and provide you with a plan to improve your quality of life.
A tinnitus evaluation at The Hearing Haven involves a few steps. Each part of the process is meant to gather information about your hearing health and how tinnitus affects you. Here’s what you can expect:
Patient History and Symptom Discussion
The first step is a detailed conversation about your medical history and symptoms. The hearing specialist will ask questions to better understand your tinnitus experience, such as:
This discussion helps the specialist gather clues about what might be causing your tinnitus and how it impacts your daily life.
Next, the hearing professional will perform a physical examination of your ears. Using a tool called an otoscope, they will look inside your ear canals to check for any visible issues, such as:
Sometimes, tinnitus can be caused by something as simple as a buildup of earwax. In those cases, removing the blockage can significantly reduce or eliminate the tinnitus.
Since tinnitus is often related to hearing loss, the evaluation will also include hearing tests performed at The Hearing Haven in Amarillo, Texas. These tests help determine if your tinnitus is linked to any hearing impairment. Here’s what you can expect during the hearing test portion of the evaluation:
You’ll wear a pair of headphones and listen to sounds at various pitches and volumes. You’ll signal when you hear a sound, which helps the specialist understand your hearing range.
In this test, you’ll listen to spoken words and repeat what you hear. This helps assess how well you can understand speech, especially in environments where there’s background noise.
This test involves comparing the sound of your tinnitus to other sounds. The hearing specialist will play different tones, and you’ll identify which one most closely matches the noise in your ears. This helps quantify the pitch and volume of your tinnitus, providing more insight into how it affects you.
Middle ear issues can sometimes be linked to tinnitus, so a middle ear test may also be part of your evaluation at The Haring Haven in Amarillo, Texas. This involves a painless test called tympanometry, which measures how your eardrum moves in response to air pressure. It helps identify problems like fluid in the ear or Eustachian tube dysfunction that could contribute to tinnitus.
You may be asked to complete a tinnitus questionnaire to evaluate how much the condition affects your daily life. These questionnaires are designed to assess things like:
The answers you provide help the specialist at The Hearing Haven understand the severity of your symptoms and how much they impact your overall well-being.
Once your evaluation is complete, the expert will have a much better understanding of your tinnitus and its possible causes. The next step is creating a personalized treatment plan that addresses your specific needs.
One of the most common treatments for tinnitus is sound therapy. The idea is to use external sounds to make the tinnitus less noticeable or distracting. This can include:
If tinnitus is causing anxiety or stress, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) might be recommended. This type of therapy helps you change the way you respond to tinnitus, teaching coping strategies to reduce its emotional impact.
Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT) combines sound therapy and counseling to help you get used to the tinnitus sound, so it becomes less noticeable over time. TRT aims to retrain your brain to filter out the tinnitus noise, allowing you to focus on other sounds instead.
Sometimes, managing tinnitus involves making small lifestyle changes that can make a big difference. The hearing professional at The Hearing Haven may recommend strategies such as:

Hearing loss is a daily journey. Many people want to know why OTC (over the counter) hearing aid solutions are not as easy as they seem. It’s not as simple as putting a device in your ear and hearing like you remember. Hearing and auditory understanding are two completely different beasts. Majority of individuals say I can't hear. What they mean is I am not understanding words clearly. This has to do with your brain and how it is processing sound. There are many factors to consider when purchasing a hearing aid and what your provider is going to do for you to ensure success over years, not just a few months. Truly, your hearing aids are worthless without an experienced professional to submit a prescription and follow up treatment plan. At the hearing haven we are not saying you won’t have problems. In fact we are stating the opposite. You will encounter many problems during your better hearing journey and we ensure when you are experiencing that problem we will be there to resolve it quickly and with integrity.
We specialize in customized hearing solutions for everyone. We are committed to recommending and providing proper hearing protection for recreational and industrial adventures. We strive for an earlier adoption rate. Most people wait until it is too late. Majority insurances can offer coverage for their members before claiming medicare. Sadly, people wait till they are on medicare, expecting payment. That simply isn’t true. Medicare does not offer the proper payment for these circumstances. We are committed to educating and advocating on the patient's behalf and to offer affordable options.
